CEDAR RIDGE CENTER Nursing Home – Facts and Information

Perhaps you are not familiar with the Nursing Home Compare website administered by Medicare.gov. Nursing Home Compare is designed to allow the public to understand certain information about nursing homes so consumers can make wise choices when deciding where they may want to put a loved one who needs rehabilitation or long term care services. While the information contained on Nursing Home Compare is not perfect (see our previous post regarding some facilities intentionally misleading the public using the website), it is a great tool to allow you to see a snapshot of a facility’s staffing, health inspections, and quality measures. This information is available at http://www.medicare.gov/nursinghomecompare/search.html.

CEDAR RIDGE CENTER – Sissonville, WV (Kanawha County)

Cedar Ridge Center is a 119 bed facility operated by Genesis Healthcare. The overall rating for Cedar Ridge Center is only one star (much below average). Its health inspections are equally bad, only 1 star (much below average). The staffing rating for Putnam Center is only one star (much below average). In fact, the staffing at Putnam Center is lower than the West Virginia and National averages for RNs and CNAs.  This is problematic because staffing is closely tied to the development of bed sores (also called pressure sores, pressure ulcers or decubitus ulcers), malnutrition, dehydration, infections, loss of mobility, and falls. The most recent annual inspection conducted by the WV Office of Facility Licensure and Certification (OHFLAC) found various significant problems, such as the failure to make sure that the nursing home area is free from accident hazards and risks and provides supervision to prevent avoidable accidents.  Quality measures also indicate that more residents of Cedar Ridge Center have historically suffered from urinary tract infections, suffer from moderate to severe pain, develop bed sores, need additional help with their activities of daily living, and develop depressive symptoms.
