HEARTLAND OF MARIETTA – Facts and Information

Perhaps you are not familiar with the Nursing Home Compare website administered by Medicare.gov. Nursing Home Compare is designed to allow the public to understand certain information about nursing homes so consumers can make wise choices when deciding where they may want to put a loved one who needs rehabilitation or long term care services. While the information contained on Nursing Home Compare is not perfect (see our previous post regarding some facilities intentionally misleading the public using the website), it is a great tool to allow you to see a snapshot of a facility’s staffing, health inspections, and quality measures. This information is available at http://www.medicare.gov/nursinghomecompare/search.html.

Heartland of Marietta is a 101 bed facility owned by HCR Manorcare. The overall rating for Heartland of Marietta is only two stars (below average). Its health inspections are worse, only 1 star (much below average). Similarly, staffing at Heartland of Marietta is only 1 star (much below average). Staffing at Heartland of Marietta was lower than both the National and the Ohio averages for registered nurse hours per patient per day, licensed practical nurse hours per patient per day AND for certified nurses’ aide hours per patient per day. Inspections by State and/or Federal investigators found three times as many deficiencies as compared to the average Ohio nursing home facility. The most recent annual survey conducted by the Ohio Department of Health’s Bureau of Long Term Care found various significant problems, such as the failure to provide necessary care and services to maintain the highest well-being of each resident, and failure to give residents proper treatment to prevent new bed sores (also called pressure sores, pressure ulcers or decubitus ulcers) or heal existing bed sores.
