Perhaps you are not familiar with the Nursing Home Compare website administered by CMS at Medicare.gov. Nursing Home Compare is designed to allow the public to understand certain information about nursing homes so consumers can make wise choices when deciding where they may want to put a loved one who needs rehabilitation or long term care services. While the information contained on Nursing Home Compare is not perfect (see our previous post regarding some facilities intentionally misleading the public using the website), it is a great tool to allow you to see a snapshot of a facility’s staffing, health inspections, and quality measures. This information is available at http://www.medicare.gov/nursinghomecompare/search.html.
HILLTOP CENTER – Hilltop, WV (Fayette County)
Hilltop Center, in Hilltop, WV (near Beckley) is a 120 bed facility owned by Genesis Healthcare. The overall rating for Hilltop Center is only two stars (below average). The Health Inspection score for Hilltop Center is even worse, only one star (much below average). Further, recent surveys conducted by OHFLAC show that Hilltop Center has failed to provide necessary care and services to maintain the highest well being of each resident, has failed to have a program that investigates, controls and keeps infection from spreading, and has failed to make sure the nursing home area is safe, easy to use, clean and comfortable for residents, staff and the public. Quality Measures show that Hilltop Center Nursing Home has a higher percentage of long-stay residents who suffer one or more major falls with injury, develop or suffer from urinary tract infections, develop pressure ulcers (also called bed sores, pressure sores, or decubitus ulcers),and who lose control of their bowels. Each of these problems is likely tied to the care (or lack thereof) that is provided to Hilltop Center patients.
