Local Nursing Homes (Clarksburg, WV area)

Perhaps you are not familiar with the Nursing Home Compare website administered by Medicare.gov. Nursing Home Compare is designed to allow the public to understand certain information about nursing homes so consumers can make wise choices when deciding where they may want to put a loved one who needs rehabilitation or long term care services. While the information contained on Nursing Home Compare is not perfect (see our previous post regarding some facilities intentionally misleading the public using the website), it is a great tool to allow you to see a snapshot of a facility’s staffing, health inspections, and quality measures. This information is available at http://www.medicare.gov/nursinghomecompare/search.html.

In and around Clarksburg, WV (Harrison County and Lewis County), there are six facilities with at least 50 certified beds. This article is designed to summarize important information about each of these six facilities:

HEARTLAND OF CLARKSBURG (Nutter Fort, WV)

Heartland of Clarksburg is a 120 bed facility owned by HCR Manorcare. The overall rating for Heartland of Clarksburg is only two stars (below average). Its health inspections are even worse, only 1 star (much below average). Inspections by State and/or Federal investigators have found 37 health deficiencies (as compared to an average U.S. facility having only 6.8 deficiencies). The most recent annual inspection conducted by the WV Office of Facility Licensure and Certification (OHFLAC) found various significant problems, such as repeated failures to respond to call lights in a timely fashion. Staffing at Heartland of Clarksburg was also lower than both the National and the West Virginia averages for registered nurse hours per patient per day, licensed practical nurse hours per patient per day AND for certified nurses’ aide hours per patient per day.

EMERITUS AT THE HERITAGE (Bridgeport, WV)

Emeritus at the Heritage is a 51 bed facility. The overall rating for Emeritus at the Heritage is only one star (much below average). Its health inspections are equally bad, only 1 star (much below average). Quality measures also come in at only one star (much below average). Inspections by State and/or Federal investigators have found 24 health deficiencies (as compared to an average U.S. facility having only 6.8 deficiencies). Staffing at Emeritus at the Heritage was also very low for registered nurses, with only 20 minutes of RN hours per patient per day compared to a West Virginia average of 48 minutes and a National average of 49 minutes. The most recent annual inspection conducted by the WV Office of Facility Licensure and Certification (OHFLAC) found various significant problems, such as failing to provide adequate care plans for residents with bed sores (also called pressure sores, pressure ulcers or decubitus ulcers) and failing to prevent new bed sores.

CLARKSBURG NURSING & REHABILITATION CENTER (Clarksburg, WV)

Clarksburg Nursing & Rehabilitation Center is a 98 bed facility. While most quality indicators are positive for Clarksburg Nursing & Rehabilitation, Staffing was lower than both the National and the West Virginia averages for registered nurse hours per patient per day, licensed practical nurse hours per patient per day AND for certified nurses’ aide hours per patient per day.

SALEM CENTER (Salem, WV)

Salem Center is a 112 bed facility owned by Genesis Healthcare. The overall rating for Salem Center is only one star (much below average). Its health inspections are equally bad, only 1 star (much below average). Inspections by State and/or Federal investigators have found 19 health deficiencies (as compared to an average U.S. facility having only 6.8 deficiencies). Staffing at Salem Center was also lower than both the National and the West Virginia averages for registered nurse hours per patient per day, and for certified nurses’ aide hours per patient per day.

MEADOWVIEW MANOR HEALTH CARE (Bridgeport, WV)

Meadowview Manor is a 60 bed facility. The overall rating for Meadowview Manor is two stars (below average). Its health inspections are also 2 stars (below average). Quality measures were only one star (much below average). Inspections by State and/or Federal investigators have found 18 health deficiencies (as compared to an average U.S. facility having only 6.8 deficiencies). Staffing at Meadowview Manor was also lower than both the National and the West Virginia averages for registered nurse hours per patient per day and licensed practical nurse hours per patient per day. The most recent annual inspection conducted by the WV Office of Facility Licensure and Certification (OHFLAC) found various significant problems, such as failing to adequately investigate instances of abuse and neglect and failing to prevent the development of pressure ulcers (also called pressure sores, bed sores or decubitus ulcers).

CRESTVIEW MANOR NURSING & REHABILITATION (Jane Lew, WV)

Crestview Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation is a 72 bed facility. It appears that Crestview Manor has historically been significantly understaffed. The staffing rating for Crestview Manor is only one star (much below average). In fact, the registered nurse hours per patient per day at Crestview Manor is only 22 minutes per patient per day, compared with the West Virginia average of 48 minutes and the National average of 49 minutes. Just as alarming, the certified nurses’ aides (CNAs) who provide the hands-on care at the facility, provide only one hour and 18 minutes of care per patient per day. This does not compare favorably to the West Virginia average of 2 hours and 9 minutes or the National average of 2 hours and 28 minutes. The most recent annual inspection conducted by the WV Office of Facility Licensure and Certification (OHFLAC) found various significant problems, such as failing to have a program to investigate, control and keep infections from spreading.
