Perhaps you are not familiar with the Nursing Home Compare website administered by Medicare.gov. Nursing Home Compare is designed to allow the public to understand certain information about nursing homes so consumers can make wise choices when deciding where they may want to put a loved one who needs rehabilitation or long term care services. While the information contained on Nursing Home Compare is not perfect (see our previous post regarding some facilities intentionally misleading the public using the website), it is a great tool to allow you to see a snapshot of a facility’s staffing, health inspections, and quality measures. This information is available at http://www.medicare.gov/nursinghomecompare/search.html.
NELLA’S, INC. (Elkins, WV)
Nella’s, Inc. is a 102 bed facility. The overall rating for Nella’s, Inc. is two stars (below average). Staffing at Nella’s, Inc. rates only one star (much below average). In fact, the understaffing at Nella’s, Inc. shows that there are only enough RNs to provide 16 minutes of nursing care per patient per day. The West Virginia and National averages are 48 and 49 minutes per day. Unsurprisingly, such low staffing numbers increase the numbers of patients with bed sores (also called pressure sores, pressure ulcers or decubitus ulcers) at Nella’s, Inc.
