Perhaps you are not familiar with the Nursing Home Compare website administered by Medicare.gov. Nursing Home Compare is designed to allow the public to understand certain information about nursing homes so consumers can make wise choices when deciding where they may want to put a loved one who needs rehabilitation or long term care services. While the information contained on Nursing Home Compare is not perfect (see our previous post regarding some facilities intentionally misleading the public using the website), it is a great tool to allow you to see a snapshot of a facility’s staffing, health inspections, and quality measures. This information is available at http://www.medicare.gov/nursinghomecompare/search.html.
PARKERSBURG CENTER (Parkersburg, WV)
Parkersburg Center is a 66 bed facility owned by Genesis Healthcare. Parkersburg Center rates as only a 2 star facility for staffing. In fact, medicare.gov shows that Parkersburg Center has significantly less licensed nursing staff hours per resident per day than both the West Virginia average and the national average. The most recent annual inspection conducted by the WV Office of Facility Licensure and Certification (OHFLAC) found various significant problems, such as failure to have a program that investigates, controls and keeps infections from spreading, and the failure to operate and provide services according to Federal, State, and local laws and professional standards.
