Perhaps you are not familiar with the Nursing Home Compare website administered by CMS at Medicare.gov. Nursing Home Compare is designed to allow the public to understand certain information about nursing homes so consumers can make wise choices when deciding where they may want to put a loved one who needs rehabilitation or long term care services. While the information contained on Nursing Home Compare is not perfect (see our previous post regarding some facilities intentionally misleading the public using the website), it is a great tool to allow you to see a snapshot of a facility’s staffing, health inspections, and quality measures. This information is available at http://www.medicare.gov/nursinghomecompare/search.html.
PINE LODGE – Beckley, WV (Raleigh County)
Pine Lodge is a 120 bed facility owned by Genesis Healthcare. The overall rating for Pine Lodge is only two stars (below average). The Health Inspection score for Pine Lodge is the same, only two stars (below average). The staffing score is also only two stars (below average). A total of 24 complaints have been lodged against Pine Lodge to the WV Office of Facility Licensure and Certification (OHFLAC). Further, the most recent surveys conducted by OHFLAC show that Pine Lodge failed to give residents proper treatment to prevent new bed (pressure) sores or heal existing bed sores, failed to have a program that investigates, controls and keeps infection from spreading, and failed to provide necessary care and services to maintain the highest well being of each resident. Quality Measures show that Pine Lodge Nursing Home has a higher percentage of long-stay residents who develop or suffer from urinary tract infections, develop moderate to severe pain, develop pressure ulcers (also called bed sores, pressure sores, or decubitus ulcers), lose too much weight, and need more and more help with their activities of daily living. Each of these problems is likely tied to the care (or lack thereof) that is provided to Pine Lodge patients.
