Perhaps you are not familiar with the Nursing Home Compare website administered by Medicare.gov. Nursing Home Compare is designed to allow the public to understand certain information about nursing homes so consumers can make wise choices when deciding where they may want to put a loved one who needs rehabilitation or long term care services. While the information contained on Nursing Home Compare is not perfect (see our previous post regarding some facilities intentionally misleading the public using the website), it is a great tool to allow you to see a snapshot of a facility’s staffing, health inspections, and quality measures. This information is available at http://www.medicare.gov/nursinghomecompare/search.html.
WILLOWS CENTER (Parkersburg, WV)
Willows Center is a 97 bed facility owned by Genesis Healthcare. Although the Star Rating System indicates that Willows Center is at least average in each category, the most recent annual inspection conducted by the WV Office of Facility Licensure and Certification (OHFLAC) found various significant problems, such as the failure to prevent new bed sores (also called pressure sores, pressure ulcers or decubitus ulcers) or heal existing bed sores. During the most recent complaint survey, OHFLAC cited Willows Center for failing to write and use policies that forbid mistreatment, neglect and abuse of residents and theft of resident’s property.
